This expression is stative and does not appear in progressive forms (❗ 'I am being acquainted with'). To describe the process of becoming familiar, use 'get/become acquainted with' instead: 'She slowly became acquainted with the city's transportation system.' The adverb 'well' is frequently placed before 'acquainted' to indicate a high degree of familiarity: 'He is well acquainted with the local laws.'
