This sense belongs to technical biology and is rare outside academic or nature-writing contexts. Unlike senses 1–3, this sense can take 'to' + infinitive or 'for' + noun phrase to indicate the purpose. The past participle 'specialised' (as in 'a specialised organ') is very common in this sense.
